Spring is upon us and it means new beginnings, so when newness comes we sometimes need to let go of things of the past. Things of the past include our clothing and also clutter in our home! The task of cleaning out your closet to get ready for this new season can be quite overwhelming. I know it is overwhelming because it has been on my to do list for some weeks, and I have not fully committed to it yet. However, as the temperatures are rising and the first day of Spring is upon us, here is how we can start together:
TAKE INVENTORY
Take inventory of every item you have in your closet, and try them on and think about when was the last time you wore them. I am guilty of keeping items that I will wear again one day because they are too small, but if I am honest with myself I likely will treat myself to a new wardrobe if I ever get back into a size 8 again. When you are taking inventory make sure your items are aligned by type, so dresses, skirts, shirts, shoes, blouses, jeans, pants, suits, etc.
SORT YOUR ITEMS
Once you have taken inventory and aligned your items by type create piles within each category of the following:
LOVE ITEMS THAT FIT
LOVE ITEMS THAT DO NOT FIT
DO NOT LOVE/MAY PART WAYS
I recommend perhaps creating a schedule where you go through each item type on different days. Maybe on Monday you do shoes, Tuesday skirts, Wednesday shoes, and etc.
HANG, ALTER, OR PART WAYS
Now what to do with your items? The LOVE ITEMS THAT FIT piles is the easy part because all you need to do is put them back in your closet! Organize it in a way that works for you to easily remember what you have, and this also will help you know what you need. Maybe you need to grab a different wash of jeans or some Spring basics like a denim jacket or white tee.
Create a list of your need items, and perhaps check out your local thrift/consignment, so check out my blog on why how to shop thrift/consignment here! Also, you can utilize an app like Shopstyle (Follow me at here: https://www.shopstyle.com/shop/TheYasminMarie) where you can search a product and results show you different vendors, you can set sale alerts, and get cash back on your purchases! Also, I put together some affordable Spring trends you should check out here!
The LOVE ITEMS THAT DO NOT FIT, you may want to take them to your favorite tailor that may be able to adjust the item for you to allow you to keep them if you have shrunk or grown in some places. As for your shoes, find a good cobbler in your area as they can stretch shoes that have become a little snug, revive leather, repair heels, and so much more!
For the DO NOT LOVE/MAY PART WAYS items, you can do so in many creative ways. In fact, I already have a blog to help you make money when you are decluttering and how to consign your clothes ! You also may want to just donate your items, so check your local area for donation centers and their donation times as they have specific donation times usually.
